Novell Announces Three NetWare MHS Developer Tools
Industry Leading Support for NetWare MHS Application Development
BOSTON, MA -- January 11, 1993 -- Novell, Inc. today announced three new
products to facilitate the development of messaging applications software.
The NetWare Standard Message Format (SMF) v71 Programmer's Reference, the
NetWare SMF v71 Software Developer's Kit (SDK) for MHS and NetWare Basic MHS-
are now available to software developers.
This NetWare SMF v71 SDK, which includes the NetWare SMF v71 Programmer's
Reference, meets developer needs for comprehensive, cost-effective messaging
development tools. Additionally, the NetWare Basic MHS meets customer needs
for upgrading a pilot messaging application server to a business-wide
distributed system based on NetWare Global MHS- (Formerly, NetWare Global
Messaging).
NetWare SMF, the native API to Novell's NetWare MHS product line offers
simplicity, reliability and inherent multiplatform support which has resulted
in its widespread use. It is currently used by over 900 commercial and
corporate developers. More than 150 commercial applications and services are
available for an estimated 2.5 million installed MHS mailboxes. These
messaging applications range from electronic mail and network fax service to
workflow, scheduling and forms processing.
"NetWare MHS and the SMF API have been delivering on the promise of a
sophisticated messaging service platform for years," said Eugene Lee, director
of product planning, Beyond, Inc. "We are very pleased to see the industry
leading advancements which are now available through the introduction of these
new tools."
NetWare SMF v71 Programmer's Reference
The new Programmer's Reference provides the complete specification for the
file-based NetWare SMF v71 API. NetWare SMF v71 is the newest generation SMF
API and builds on earlier versions to answer developer needs for unlimited
recipients, unlimited message size, expanded distribution lists and long names
with hierarchical multipart workgroups.
NetWare SMF v71 Software Developer's Kit for MHS
The NetWare SMF v71 SDK includes the SMF v71 Programmer's Reference, and both
a 20 and 100 mailbox version of NetWare Global MHS. It enables developers to
create and test SMF-based applications in a variety of messaging system
configurations. In addition, the SDK allows developers to utilize NetWare
Global MHS features such as directory services and network-based message
routing.
NetWare Basic MHS
NetWare Basic MHS is a simple, compact MHS-compatible delivery system for a
single NetWare server configuration. As an OEM solution for commercial
developers, it provides an entry-level platform which may be bundled with
their products eliminating the requirement to purchase a separate messaging
service. NetWare Basic MHS supports all messaging applications written to the
SMF API for users on a single NetWare server. Organizations can use NetWare
Basic MHS initially to evaluate messaging solutions in a single-server
environment, yet maintain complete upward compatibility with NetWare Global
MHS to support multiple messaging server environments.
"Since messaging applications typically rely on an underlying network
infrastructure for message delivery, it was difficult to package a complete
solution for our customers," said Bill Nussey, chief executive officer of
DaVinci Systems, Inc. "NetWare Basic MHS enables us to do this in a way that
ensures interoperability with other MHS-based applications and compatibility
with Novell's full service messaging engine, NetWare Global MHS."
